Game Fishing Sonar Upgrade – White Pointer 850 Cabin Cruiser

Another serious game fishing electronics upgrade completed on this White Pointer 850 Cabin Cruiser, now fully dialled for offshore and deep-drop missions.

This boat received a sonar and display upgrade designed to give the skipper better situational awareness, faster target tracking, and maximum coverage when chasing pelagics.

Garmin Panoptix PS70 Through-Hull Installation

At the heart of this upgrade is a through-hull Garmin Panoptix PS70, installed using a billet aluminium fairing block from Quality Marine Electronics. This setup ensures correct transducer alignment, clean water flow, and reliable performance at speed — critical for game fishing applications.

A big shout-out to Steve at Fusion Fabrication for the outstanding welding work and the tidy custom cable covers inside the hull. As always, the workmanship is top-notch and built to last in a harsh offshore environment.

Display & Sounder Integration

To complement the existing electronics, we installed a Garmin 1553 widescreen display on the dash alongside the already-fitted Garmin 8416xsv. This gives the skipper more screen real estate to run multiple sonar views and data pages simultaneously.

The full sonar and sounder setup on this White Pointer now includes:

  • Garmin 1553 Widescreen

  • Garmin 8416xsv

  • Garmin Panoptix PS70

  • Dual GT51 transducers

  • Airmar R109LH run through a Garmin GSD 26 sounder module for high-performance deep drop fishing

This combination provides excellent coverage from shallow water right through to serious offshore depths.

Why the Garmin PS70 Is a Game Fishing Advantage

The Garmin PS70 is a genuine game changer for serious anglers. Its rapid return rate, wide multi-beam coverage, and exceptional target clarity allow skippers to track fish movement in real time and react faster when it counts.

For game fishing, this means:

  • Covering more water with fewer passes

  • Better awareness of fish movement around the boat

  • Faster decision-making when setting up drifts or manoeuvring on fish

When paired with the right displays and installed correctly, the PS70 adds a whole new level of confidence offshore.
