Transducers and marine electronics are exposed to some of the harshest conditions on a boat. Groundings, submerged objects, trailer damage, or impacts can all cause faults — and in many cases the damage isn’t obvious at first glance.

Recently, we carried out diagnostic testing on a transducer after suspected impact damage. Following testing, a detailed damage report was supplied to the customer and their insurance provider, and the claim was approved.
This highlights the importance of proper testing and documentation when insurance is involved.
Visual checks don’t always tell the full story
A transducer may appear undamaged externally but still have internal faults such as:
-
Cracked ceramic elements
-
Water ingress
-
Internal delamination
-
Wiring or strain damage
These issues can result in poor bottom lock, reduced clarity, intermittent readings, or complete signal loss, particularly at speed.
Why testing matters for insurance
Insurance providers typically require confirmation that:
-
The equipment is faulty
-
The damage is consistent with impact or incident
-
The issue is not caused by installation or incorrect setup
Proper diagnostic testing removes uncertainty and provides clear, documented findings that insurers can rely on.
What we do
Testing and assessment may include:
-
Performance verification
-
Signal and output testing
-
Inspection for physical or internal damage
-
Clear written reporting suitable for insurance submission
This helps avoid unnecessary replacements and speeds up the claims process.
If you suspect damage
If you’ve hit something or noticed a sudden change in sounder performance:
-
Don’t assume it’s a settings issue
-
Avoid replacing equipment without testing
-
Have the system assessed as early as possible
Early diagnosis can save time and cost.
