Garmin Reactor 40 Autopilot Installation – Nuline 650

A Garmin Reactor 40 autopilot installation completed on this Nuline 650, integrating seamlessly with the boat’s existing Garmin electronics system.

The boat was already equipped with a Garmin GPSMAP 8410XSV, Airmar TM275LHW transducer and GMI 20 engine data display, so the goal was to add a fully integrated autopilot while keeping the helm clean and practical.

Garmin Reactor 40 Autopilot Installation

We installed a complete Garmin Reactor 40 autopilot system, including the ECU, hydraulic pump, CCU and GHC 50 autopilot controller.

The pump and ECU were neatly installed in the rear of the boat, while the CCU was positioned under the cabin squab in a suitable location for reliable autopilot operation.

The existing GMI 20 was relocated to the top of the dash using a custom black aluminium console manufactured by Fusion Fabrication.

The dash was also modified to accommodate the new Garmin GHC 50 autopilot controller, replacing the original GMI 20 position and providing the skipper with dedicated control of the Reactor 40 system.

Hydraulic Steering Installation

Once the hydraulic components were installed, the steering system was thoroughly bled using a Bubble Buster to remove air from the system and ensure smooth and reliable steering operation.

Dockside Setup & On-Water Calibration

With the hardware installation complete, we carried out the Garmin dockside wizard and entered the relevant vessel specifications.

The boat was then taken out onto Tauranga Harbour for the final sea trial and autopilot calibration.

Conditions were ideal, with a slack tide and virtually no wind, allowing us to complete the calibration without the influence of strong environmental conditions.

Fully Integrated Garmin System

The completed installation gives the Nuline 650 a fully integrated Garmin autopilot system that works seamlessly with the existing electronics.

With the Garmin GPSMAP 8410XSV, TM275LHW transducer, GMI 20 and new Reactor 40 system all working together, the skipper now has precise and convenient control of the boat’s steering while underway.
